ANNOUNCEMENT: CHEMISTRY REU TRAVEL AWARDS

Announcement of and application process for
Chemistry NSF-REU Leadership Group Travel Awards

Background:
The NSF-REU Leadership Group announces that up to fifty travel reimbursements will be awarded to students who will attend and present their REU research at the spring national ACS meeting in San Diego, California, March 13-17, 2005. Each reimbursement will be $250.00, and no more than three awards will be made to students from a single REU site. The awards will be made in the order in which Professor David Haines receives the applications, so students are encouraged to send in their application immediately after submitting their abstracts to the ACS. Students may submit their abstracts to the Division of Chemical Education Undergraduate Research Poster sessions, or to any other session of the meeting, but the travel award will be contingent on the acceptance of the abstract for presentation at the ACS meeting.

Eligibility:

All current undergraduate students whose summer research stipends were funded by NSF-REU grants are eligible to apply. Students who were funded by NSF-REU during the summer of 2004, but who will have graduated at the time of the meeting, are also eligible. Preference will be given to students who have not received a NSF-REU Leadership Group award in the past.

Application Process:

Forward the confirmation from ACS that your abstract submission has been received to Prof. David Haines (dhaines@wellesley.edu) by email. In the email message, include the information listed below. The Chemistry Department chairperson of your home undergraduate institution will be notified of your receipt of the award. Note that the personal information that you provide is required for the reimbursement and will be kept in strict confidence but might be used for statistical analysis.

• Your social security number.
• Your email address.
• Classification of your current status: sophomore or junior or senior or graduated.
• Name and email address of the chairperson of your undergraduate institution.
• REU site at which you did the research which you will present at the ACS meeting.
• Name and email address of your REU research director.
• Indicate that your REU research director has approved your abstract.

Questions concerning the application process can be directed to Prof. David Haines (dhaines@wellesley.edu).

Announcement of the Chemistry REU Travel Awards:

The REU Travel awards will be announced via email by December 1, 2004, and they will also be posted on the NSF-REU web site, http://chemreu.chem.indiana.edu/. In this web site, a logo for NSF-REU supported presentations is given, and students must display this logo prominently on their posters at the conference.

At the time of the announcement, an acknowledgement form will be sent as a Microsoft Word file via email to each awardee. This acknowledgement form must be completed, signed and returned to Prof. David Haines during the REU social mixer at the San Diego meeting. Awardees will be notified of the details and schedule for this mixer before the ACS meeting. The reimbursement checks will be given when the acknowledgement form is received.
